( Q ) Who is eligible for a free library card?

( A ) Patrons eligible for free library service in Madison County include:

- Madison County residents
- Individuals who own property in Madison County but reside out of county.
- Educators who work in Madison County at all grade levels

Library cards are issued to individuals and are not transferable among family members or friends. Any person age 16 and over may register by giving name, address, phone number, and must show one picture I.D. and proof of residence.

( Q ) Can I get a card if I don't live in Madison County?

( A ) Nonresident library cards can be issued to patrons who do not meet residency requirements. The fee for this card is $30.00 per year or $20.00 for 1/2 year and is nonrefundable.

( Q ) How old does my child need to be to get his/her own card?

( A ) Children are eligible for their own library cards when they reach the age of 5 years. All applicants age 15 and under must have a parent or legal guardian read and sign the application. Parent must be present. By reading and signing the child’s application, the parent or guardian accepts financial responsibility for all items borrowed on the child’s card.

( Q ) How much does a library card cost?

( A ) The original card is free. A library user who has lost his/her card may apply for a new one by showing valid identification and paying a nonrefundable $3.00 replacement charge. Replacement cards are issued free of charge when a patron’s card becomes unusable due to normal wear.

( Q ) How long is my card valid?

( A ) Library cards are valid for one year from date of issue. At the end of that time, cards must be updated in order to extend library privileges. To update the card, a patron must present proper identification and must have their library card present.

( Q ) Can I return my books after the library is closed?

( A ) All library materials except audiovisual materials (Audiocassettes, Videocassettes, Kits, DVD’s, and CD’s) may be returned in book drop receptacles located at each library branch.

Note: Audiovisual materials may not be returned to the book drop. Patrons will be charged a $1.00 fee for each audiovisual item that is returned to the book drop.

( Q ) How many items can I check out?

( A ) Library users may have up to 25 items checked out at any time. The following subject and/or media specific loan limits have been established:

- DVDs: Five ( 5 ) per card.
- Audio Materials: Five ( 5 ) per card.
- eBooks / Downloadable Audiobooks: Five ( 5 ) per card.
-Audiovisual materials must be checked out using an adult card.

( Q ) How many times can I renew my materials?

( A ) Online Catalog  -  Two twenty-one (21) day renewals of items with standard loan periods are permitted, if the item is not reserved for another library user. Videos and DVDs have two seven (7) day renewal periods. There are no renewals on items with holds or ILL items. Items may be renewed in any of our branches, by calling the library, or through our Online Catalog.

( Q ) How long can I check an item out?

( A ) The majority of items within the library's collection may be borrowed for twenty-one (21) days.

Special loan periods have been established for the following library materials:
- Videos & DVDs: Seven (7) days
- eBooks / Audiobooks: Patron has a choice from a seven (7) day loan period or fourteen (14) day loan period.

( Q ) If you don't have a book I want, can you get it?

( A ) Books not owned by our library system and information on a particular subject may be requested through the InterLibrary Loan Service (ILL). The following materials cannot be borrowed or loaned through InterLibrary Loan.

- Audiovisual, genealogy and reference materials.
- Books published within the last six months.
- Non-circulating materials owned by MCLS.
