( Q ) Who is eligible for a free library card?

( A ) Patrons eligible for free library service in Madison County include:

- Madison County residents
Any individual living in Madison County may be issued a library card at no charge. Library cards are issued to individuals and are not transferable among family members or friends. Any person may register by providing proof of name and address, and contact information.

- Individuals who own property in Madison County
Any individual who owns property in Madison County may be issued a library card at no charge. Property owners must provide a deed to the property listing the owners name.

- Privileged Non-Residents
- Individuals who attend post-secondary school in Madison County
- Educators who work in Madison County at all grade levels
- Residents of counties that border Madison County (Attala, Hinds, Holmes, Leake, Rankin, Scott, and Yazoo)

Any individual meeting any of the above requirements and providing name, proof of address and phone number may be issued a nonresident library card at no charge.

Privileged Non-Residents have access to checkout all physical materials located in any of our five branches.

Privileged Non-Residents are restricted from checking out eAudio and eBook materials through OverDrive (Libby) and Hoopla.


( Q ) How old does my child need to be to get his/her own card?

( A ) Children can receive a card at any age. All applicants under age 18 must have a parent or legal guardian read and sign the application. Parent or legal guardian must be present. By reading and signing the child's application, the parent or guardian accepts full responsibility for any and all charges due to damaged or lost materials incurred through the use of the card. They also understand their child will have open access to all online services and they take full parental responsibility for their use of all library materials and resources.

( Q ) How much does a library card cost?

( A ) Library cards are free. A library user who has lost his/her card may apply for a new one by showing valid identification. Replacement cards are issued free of charge.

( Q ) How long is my card valid?

( A ) Library cards are valid for one year from date of issue. At the end of that time, cards must be updated in order to extend library privileges.

( Q ) Can I return my books after the library is closed?

( A ) All library materials may be returned in book drop receptacles located at each library branch.

( Q ) How many items can I check out?

( A ) Regular library cardholders may have up to 35 items checked out at any time. The following subject and/or media specific loan limits have been established:

- DVDs: Ten ( 10 ) per card.
- Audio Materials: Ten ( 10 ) per card.
- OverDrive eBooks / Downloadable Audiobooks: Ten ( 10 ) per card.
- Hoopla: Three ( 3 ) checkouts per card per month.

( Q ) How many times can I renew my materials?

( A ) Online Catalog  -  Two twenty-one (21) day renewals of items (books & audio books) with standard loan periods are permitted, if the item is not reserved for another library user. DVDs have two seven (7) day renewal periods. There are no renewals on items with holds. Items may be renewed in any of our branches, by calling the library, or through our Online Catalog. Interlibrary Loan Materials are renewable contingent upon permission of the owning library.

( Q ) How long can I check an item out?

( A ) The majority of items within the library's collection may be borrowed for twenty-one (21) days.

Special loan periods have been established for the following library materials:
- DVDs: Seven (7) days
- OverDrive eBooks / Audiobooks: Patron has a choice from a seven (7) day loan period, a fourteen (14) day loan period, or a twenty-one (21) day loan period

( Q ) If you don't have a book I want, can you get it?

( A ) Books not owned by our library system and information on a particular subject may be requested through the InterLibrary Loan Service (ILL). There is a limit of 5 Interlibrary Loan Requests per patron. The following materials cannot be borrowed or loaned through InterLibrary Loan.

- Genealogy and reference materials.
- Books published within the last six months.
- Non-circulating materials owned by MCLS.


( Q ) How much are overdue fines?

( A ) All of our libraries are Fine Free!

( Q ) What Information Do I Need for a Library Card?

( A ) ALL APPLICANTS MUST FILL OUT THE LIBRARY CARD APPLICATION IN PERSON AT ONE OF OUR MCLS LIBRARIES TO OBTAIN A LIBRARY CARD. ALL APPLICANTS UNDER THE AGE OF 18 MUST HAVE THE SIGNATURE OF A PARENT OR GUARDIAN OVER THE AGE OF 18 YEARS OLD AND THE PARENT OR GUARDIAN MUST BE PRESENT.
