Join the 100 Days of Reading Challenge

MCLS is thrilled to announce we are a recipient of a $15,000 Save the Children 100 Days of Reading grant!!! Join children and families from our community and across America in the 100 Days of Reading Challenge! Did you know that without daily reading practice, children can lose up to three months of literacy skills over summer? But there’s good news! Reading at least 20 minutes a day can significantly boost vocabulary and prevent learning loss! To keep children learning this summer, MCLS is hosting a reading challenge. We challenge you to read at least 20 minutes every day, from June 1 through September 8 (World Literacy Day)!

Here’s how to participate:

o Read a book, magazine, graphic novel or whatever you like for at least 20 minutes every day
o Keep track of how much time you spend reading each day in your reading log – you can read on your own, to someone, or with someone
o When your reading log is full, turn it in for a new log
o Return your treasure map July 18-29 for a brand NEW book while supplies last. After that, we will continue to accept them but the book selection will be smaller

Make it fun! Try reading a book:

• To a friend or family member
• In a pillow fort
• With a flashlight
• To a stuffed animal or favorite toy
• Under a tree
• In your pajamas
• In your sleeping bag
• That your friend likes
• That your mom or dad liked as a child
• Whose main character is about your age
• About a place you’d like to visit
• That you’ve read before and loved

FIND TREASURE AT YOUR LIBRARY & TAKE THE CHALLENGE!!! Reading logs and treasure maps will be available starting June 1, 2022.

The Save the Children 100 Days of Reading grant money will be used to provide library resources and services necessary to meet the evolving informational, recreational, and cultural needs of the public, thus enhancing individual and community life. Funds will be used to provide nutritional lunches and snacks for youth throughout Madison County as well as incentives and prizes to those who complete their reading logs allowing us to help keep children fed and learning during the summer. These funds will also allow us to bring in authors (virtually or in-person) to showcase their work and inspire children to be readers, writers and creators.
