Ridgeland Branch January News by Jill Swan

2020 was, to say the last, a challenging year for all of us. We’ve missed you so much at the library, but it has been so fun getting to be creative with ways to reach you at home. As much as we miss you, it’s more important to keep everyone safe. 2020 brought us so many amazing programs that we are bringing with us into 2021! We are going to have our Zoom programs every week, including Little Listeners Storytime every Monday at 10:00am. This storytime is geared towards children ages 0 – 3 but everyone is welcome to join us! We also have STEM programs for 8-11 year olds, and Teen Nights for 12-18 year olds every Wednesday.

One of my favorite things we got to do last year was launching our NEW Teen LitKits for those that are 12-18! These kits are handpicked by Mrs. Jill specifically for you! You tell us what books, movies, and TV shows you like or don’t like, as well as what your other interests are, and we create a subscription box that is made specifically for you. Every box included at least one library book, a book you got to keep, a craft, as well as snacks and candy. Our first box rolled out in November, and was a HUGE success! Our Spring Teen LitKit will be available in March, so keep an eye out on our website, Instagram, and Facebook for information on how to register!

This new year also brings with it some really exciting new programs. In January, we partnered with The Butterfly Project and Fat Cat Art Café, as well as with assistance from ALA’s Dia grant program, to bring you a project that is very close to our hearts. The Butterfly Project is an organization that sends out ceramic butterflies to paint and be displayed around the community to bring awareness to the 1.5 million children that died in the Holocaust. The people from the Butterfly Project and Fat Cat Art Café have been great supporters of the library, and we are so proud of this partnership. On January 21st, we hosted a Zoom program where everyone who picked up one of our Butterfly Project Kits showed off their butterflies, and shared stories about the importance of their family’s story. Every family has a story, and every single story looks different. These stories are celebrated here at the library and this partnership was a wonderful way to express that. Be on the lookout throughout the community for these butterflies!

If you are interested in any of our recurring programs, or anything happening in the library, check our website (mclsms.org), our Facebook page (facebook.com/mclslibraries), and our Instagram page (@mclsms). We miss you and we cannot wait to see you really soon!
