Sign up for a Library Card

(Canton, MS) – September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when Madison County Library System joins the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning.

There is nothing more empowering than signing up for your own library card. Through access to technology, media resources and educational programs, a library card gives students the tools to succeed in the classroom and provides people of all ages opportunities to pursue their dreams and passions.

At MCLS we offer everything from early literacy programs with online fun time to virtual homework help and now that we have partnered with Google we are able to bring digital skill help and business mentor options to job seekers and small businesses. On our website, you’ll find a wide variety of educational resources and activities, including ScienceFlix, Universal Class, Tutor.com, EBSCO Learning Express, Overdrive, Hoopla and more to help transform lives and communities through education.

Madison County Library System, along with libraries everywhere, continue to adapt and expand services to meet the evolving needs of our community. During September, MCLS will host Library Card Sign-up activities in our “Get Counted Drive-In Civics Fair” that we will host at 4 different branches throughout the month of September. At the event people will be able to complete 4 tasks with help from our staff. 1. Sign up for a library card, 2. register to vote, 3. complete the 2020 census and 4. local small businesses will have help updating their Google listing.
Wonder Woman is this month’s Honorary Chair for Library Card Sign-up! A founding member of the Justice League, Wonder Woman is known for strength, compassion and truth. Armed with the Lasso of Truth, Wonder Woman makes a perfect ambassador to support the value of learning and the role libraries play in transforming lives and strengthening communities through education. Diana’s Lasso of Truth compels people to tell the truth to any question they’re asked. So, have you ever wondered how one of your favorite programs came together or maybe you want to know just what a librarian does all day? All month long, you get to send us your burning questions about our library system, which we will answer during a special “Ask Me Anything” virtual session in late September!"

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries unite together in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card.
